n8n: 1,500 integrations you can self-host free
A visual canvas for AI agents and automations that drops into JavaScript or Python the moment the drag-and-drop runs out.
n8n is a fair-code workflow automation platform for building AI agents and integrations, combining a visual canvas with the ability to write JavaScript or Python wherever the visual builder is not enough. It connects to more than 1,500 integrations and ships over 9,000 community workflow templates, and it lets you switch between OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or open-source models without rebuilding the workflow. It is source-available under the Sustainable Use License rather than a standard open-source licence, and it is free to self-host, with a paid cloud option if you would rather not run it yourself.
What you get
- More than 1,500 integrations, from a single canvas
- JavaScript and Python inline, plus npm packages, when visual nodes run out
- Over 9,000 community workflow templates to start from
- Model portability: swap providers without re-architecting the workflow
- Free to self-host, with role-based access and audit trails available
Who this is not for
It is not MIT and it is not open source in the OSI sense. The Sustainable Use License restricts reselling n8n itself as a hosted service. If you intend to white-label it as your own automation product, read the licence first.

Common questions
Is n8n open source?
Not in the strict sense. n8n calls itself fair-code and distributes under the Sustainable Use License plus a separate enterprise licence. The source is available and self-hosting is free, but it does not meet the OSI open-source definition, so do not describe it to a client as MIT or Apache.
Is self-hosting really free?
Yes, for internal and client work. You pay for the server you run it on. The restrictions apply to reselling n8n itself as a hosted service.
Do I need to code?
No, for most workflows. The canvas covers a lot. The reason experienced builders pick n8n is that you can drop into JavaScript or Python for the one step that needs it, instead of hitting a wall.
How does it compare to the workflow collection on this site?
They are different things. This entry is the platform itself. The 4,300 ready-made workflows entry is a community collection of JSON files you import into a running n8n.
